The LLA was originally a distance learning qualification for women, introduced in the 1870s to allow women access to a University education before they were admitted as students to the University of St Andrews itself. Students studied at local colleges to them, and then sat examinations set by the University. The scheme was so popular it survived into the 1930s, despite the fact women were admitted as full students in 1892.
