A rare 18th century mother-of-pearl and ebony vase shape snuff mull

circa 1740
The baluster body formed by alternate mother of pearl and ebony staves, the lid with corresponding staves set with an oval silver plaque which is engraved with crest and motto, the hinge extending to a Régence style engraved and pierced plaque applied to the body and at the base and repeated on the other side, with tortoiseshell base, height 5.6cm.

Footnotes

The motto is Consilio non impetu.
The crest is that of Agnew, probably Sir Andrew Agnew of Lochnaw, Bart.

The term 'mull' is from the local dialect for 'mill' as some such boxes had a tool to crush the snuff.

Provenance;
The private collection of the late Johnny Noble of Ardkinglas and thence by descent.
