An early 20th century star sapphire and diamond ring, American

Set with an oval high domed cabochon-cut six-ray star sapphire, the setting formed as a frame of circular-cut diamonds, between similarly-cut diamond-set shoulders with shield and trapeze-cut diamond accents, to a plain hoop, size N, stamped '10% IRID', the sapphire estimated to weigh approximately 28.00cts, the diamonds estimated to weigh approximately 1.50cts in total

Footnotes

Provenance: By family repute, this ring was commissioned in the early part of the 20th century by the owner of a successful Cincinnati department store, the son of a European couple who had emigrated to the USA in the late 1800s. He built his business from scratch and presented this ring to his wife to mark a 'significant milestone'. It was then passed by descent, until it was bought by the current owner's aunt, a friend of the original family.
