A late 17th/early 18th century elm or pine and dark varnished armchair
c.1700 Probably Scottish Highlands
The arched cresting rail incorporating a central crown within a pair of scrolls, the splat with conforming scrolls and remnants of a red velvet panel, above a slightly recessed panel seat within open arms, on turned legs with a similar front stretcher and four sqaure section side stretchers raised on bun shaped feet, (surface varnish and possibly the incised carving on the arms are later Victorian embellishments) 59.5cm wide x 46cm deep x 107cm high, (23in wide x 18in deep x 42in high)

This splat-back chair is part of a defined group of chairs made in Scotland in the late 17th and early 18th century. In comparison to many English models of a similar type and date the present example and others documented are quite low at under 110cm. Painted or varnished frames in conjunction with scroll-carved cresting rails, and double side rails are recurring structural elements. See: Dr Bernard D.
