This splat-back chair is part of a defined group of chairs made in Scotland in the late 17th and early 18th century. In comparison to many English models of a similar type and date the present example and others documented are quite low at under 110cm. Painted or varnished frames in conjunction with scroll-carved cresting rails, and double side rails are recurring structural elements. See: Dr Bernard D. Cotton Scottish Vernacular Furniture, published 2008 by Thames and Hudson, p 154-156, figs 258-262.
