Comprising lobby table and two small chairs, this group, copiously carved with upright and trailing thistles, represents an informed attempt to recall the ornament of Scottish sixteenth century furniture. The vigorously executed plant carving reflects accurately the panels of furniture from the east coast of Scotland, notably from Arbroath and St Andrews, made during the early 1500s. The skilled craftsman who carved these twentieth century pieces could have seen original items such as the St Andrews Cupboard (St Mary's College, University of St Andrews), or possibly copied the ornament from images in either John Small, Ancient and Modern Furniture, 1883, or J.S. Richardson, 'Unrecorded Scottish Woodcarvings' in Proceedings of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, Vol. XII, 1926.
