George Wylie (1921-2012) was a multidisciplinary artist who created a vast range of works in performance and public art. Born in Shettleston, Glasgow, and later residing in Gourock, Wylie originally worked as a customs officer before later taking up art.

Examples of Wylie's public art can be seen at the Buchanan Bus Station, in Glasgow, where the piece 'Clyde Clock' (depicting a clock on running legs) is displayed and 'Monument to Maternity', a work depicting a huge nappy pin, placed at the Rottenrow Maternity Hospital.

Standing Stone was created in the same year that Wylie created his sculpture The Stones of Muckle Chuckle, a set of faux standing stones made of canvas, originally installed in Gourock but later exhibited at Hollyrood Park in Edinburgh for Fringe Sunday 1985.

Wylie's interest in the metaphorical and material qualities of stone was also explored in his work to commemorate the new Scottish Parliament 'Stones of Scotland'. The work consists of thirty two pieces of rock, from each of the individual local authority regions of Scotland, arranged in a circle in Regents Park Edinburgh.

Within the past year a major archiving of George Wylie's work has occurred. This was then officially launched by an exhibition in Glasgow Collin's Gallery culminating in The Whysman Festival where The Creative Scotland arts agency gave a £160,000 award to celebrate Wylie's work.
