A rare luckenbooth brooch

mid 18th century, attributed to Hugh Ross of Tain, with single mark depicting St.Duthac, flanked by initials S and D
Formed as two interlocking hearts, engraved to the back with betrothal initials 'M.K' over 'I.MK' and 'Fe*** God', height 5.8cm.

Footnotes

This great rarity, recently discovered in Canada is the only Tain made brooch recorded.

The attribution to Ross can made with confidence. The St.Dunthac mark is an exact match for that illustrated in G. P. Moss and A. D. Roe, Highland Gold and Silversmiths, NMS Publishing, Edinburgh, 1999, page 155, second illustration from the top of the page. This illustrated mark is accompanied by the maker's mark HR conjoined and by a spurious date letter.
