The circular plaque reads;
Robt Burns of the Excise.
The letter reads;
This snuff mull purchased lately at Mr Bacon's Sale at Brownhill. Have no doubt belonged to the late Robert Burns my Husband, as I have seen it or one exactly similar to it in his posesion (sic) and I believe the report of its having been presented by him to Mr Bacon.

Mr Bacon was the landlord of Brownhill Inn, Dumfriesshire, where Burns frequented. The Ayrshire Monthly Newsletter of 5th April 1844 contained the following extract;
At the sale of the effects of Mr Bacon, Brownhill Inn, after his death in 1825, his snuff-box, being found to bear the inscription 'Robert Burns Officer of the Excise'.
