The Art of Teaching in Sport; Designed as a Prelude to a Set of Toys, for Enabling Ladies to Instill the Rudiments of Spelling, Reading, Grammar and Arithmetic, under the Idea of Amusement, half-title, contemporary sheep, worn, 8vo, John Marshall, [?1796]
Footnotes
SCARCE. Attributed to Eleanor Fenn, who also wrote under the name of Mrs. Lovechild, a work on child rearing and education, intended to accompany a "set of toys". The author proposes a teaching method through "sport" or play, rather than threat. "Arithmetic is a very dull study to children; and if the rod and the slate hang side by side, it cannot fail to be a disagreeable one... [however] Curiosity is in children a passion... it is easy to dispose them to take delight in learning".
