EGYPT

CARTER (OWEN BROWNE) Illustrations of Cairo, 19 lithographed plates, some spotting, dampstain to upper and right margins not affecting images, publishers cloth gilt, worn, spine defective, contents coming loose, folio, [Winchester?, c.1860]

Footnotes

Carter (c.1805–1859) travelled to Cairo with Robert Hay as part of the archaeological expedition to the Nile Valley in 1829–1830 and contributed to Hay's 'Illustrations of Cairo' (1840). Financially a failure, nonetheless these were "the first accurate representations of Cairo's picturesque Islamic urbanism, predating the better-known images by David Roberts." (ODNB)

In this edition (believed to have been published posthumously by Carter's family as a memorial) the illustrations have been re-lithographed in a reduced size.
