A large chamber barrel organ-secrétaire à abattant with timepiece, by Joh. Palven,

Italian, circa 1830,
with five barrels pinned for one air each, 51-key action with brass keyframe, weight-driven motor with large double-fin governor and two ranks of wood pipes, in late Empire cabinet, with gilt gesso spread-eagle top on arched pediment, the timepiece with white enamel dial and Roman numerals signed Alois Rechel in Wien, on pleated green silk ground, egg-and-dart moulding, single frieze drawer above main fall enclosing fitted interior, flanked by a pair of turned ebonised columns with gilt gesso caps, the whole veneered in book-matched flame mahogany, side panel doors with matching pleated silk infils, with weight and crank - 101in. (257cm) high, the width 44in. (112cm), the depth 26in. (66cm), the barrels 25in. (63.5cm), 6.1/2in. (16.5cm) diameter

Saleroom notices

Viennese in manufacture, Italian retailer's stamp applied circa 1840. The period barrel tune book and provenance from 1897 now discovered and accompanies the instrument.
