A rare folding boxwood Gunter quadrant, English, dated 1680,

stamped I.G. 1680, for latitude 52 degrees, 15 minutes, with two brass hinges and suspension ring, engraved with degree scale around the circumference, hour lines and a table or almanac, the reverse with brass securing lock and deeply engraved Valentine Green's 6in (15cm) diameter

Formerly the property of Michael Richey (1917-2009) Director of the Royal Institute of Navigation 1947-1980, and intrepid single handed yachtsman who took part, in his junk rigged Folkboats "Jester" in 13 solo transatlantic crossings, often employing antique nautical instruments.
