A Swept-Hilt Rapier
Early 17th Century, Probably Italian

With tapering double-edged blade of flattened hexagonal section stamped with letters within the border engraved fuller on each side of the forte, rectangular ricasso struck on each side with five diamond-shaped marks within incised lines, hilt comprising bars of circular section with straight quillons swelling towards the tips, knuckle-guard with scrolled foliate terminal and linked on the outside by a curved bar to a large side-ring linking the tips of the arms, smaller side-ring below, and trifucated inner-guard linking the arms to the knuckle-guard, barrel-shaped pommel with button finial, and later leather-covered grip bound with twisted wire
