An Unusual Turkish Yatagan With European Silver-Gilt Mounts
Mid-Late 18th Century

With slightly recurved single-edged blade (some rust patination) struck with a circular bladesmith's mark on one side, a tapering rounded silver mount over each side (one incomplete) of the forte cast, pieced and chased in low relief with rocailles and foliage involving a martial trophy, the hilt cast and chased in relief with foliage, rocailles, two panels of basketweave and involving a martial trophy centered on a close-helmet on both sides, all against a punched ground, the pommel formed in the round as a horse's head, a mount at the base of the grip possibly intended to carry a knuckle-chain (missing), in original wooden scabbard carved with longitudinal lines and covered in black leather (some damage) with border engraved locket, chape (terminal missing) and suspension mounts en suite with the hilt, the last with a ring for suspension, retaining most of its original gilding throughout
