A Very Rare Pair Of 'Maximilian' Mitten Gauntlets
Early 16th Century

Of bright iron with old varnish over the outer surfaces, each with cuff made in two pieces hinged together on one side and with pin-catch engaging with a hole on the other, recessed turned upper borders, five articulated metacarpal plates, extending down the back of the hand to the prominently ridged knuckle-plate, the upper metacarpal plates each with a boss over the ulna, three overlapping plates over the fingers ridged en suite with the knuckle-plate, the lower ones pierced with four holes, working on dome-headed rivets, and with hinged four-plate thumb defences, the cuffs and metacarpal plates embossed with radiating flutes between ribs with incised line borders (some light pitting) (2)
