An English Rapier
Circa 1640

With tapering double-edged blade of flattened hollowed diamond section, iron hilt (some pitting) comprising shallow shell-guard (minor damage) embossed, pierced and chased with a grotesque mask amid foliage on each side, an outer side-ring above on the outside chiselled with a monster at the centre, knuckle-guard and down-bent rear quillon en suite, inner thumb-ring, globular pommel with large button finial and chiselled with punched scales, acanthus foliage above, and later spirally-twist horn grip
