David-Hendrikius Bruce was born in Coeverden in the Netherlands in 1755. He joined the Dutch army in 1782 and served in the Army of Batavia. He saw service in Europe from 1805 and from 1809 to 1811 served in the Army of Brabant. In 1811 he moved to the French service and served in Portugal. He was at Salamanca, Burgos and Venta-del-Pozo as a Brigadier General. He returned from French service in 1813 and rejoined the Dutch army in 1814 as Lieutenant-General. He was made Commander of the Legion of Honour in 1813 and was a holder of the Netherlands Military Order of William. He died in Utrecht in 1828
