A Persian Circular Steel Dhal
Qajar, Late 19th Century

Of convex form, with four gold-damascened bosses chiselled with flower-heads, and an applied brass border, pierced centrally with a gold-damascened Persian verse against a ground of pierced arabesques, the surface elaborately pierced overall with cartouche-shaped panels and interlinked borders of pierced arabesques and scrolls, the remaining surfaces with gold-damascened line borders, and enriched overall with numerous brass nails also securing a foil background, the outer border with ovoidal and circular panels of chiselled Persian verses in cursive script retaining traces of silver-damascening between slender borders of foliage (light surface rust)
