A Kaneie school tsuba

After Kaneie, 17th century
The iron mokkogata tsuchimeji plate well hammered and carved with two figures in a boat before a distant temple, the reveres with a leaping hare and a full moon, the details highlighted in gold and silver takazogan, applied with a gold rim, inscribed Joshu Fushimi ju Kaneie 2 7/8in (7.3cm) long

Provenance: Alexander G. Mosle Collection, no. 412, sold Parke-Bernet Galleries, New York, Japanese Art, Part One of the Collection of Alexander G. Mosle 22 April, 1948, lot 88.

Though this tsuba bears the signature of the first Kaneie (Dai Shodai Kaneie) it is more likely the work of a later follower.
