An impressive lacquer and ivory shodana (cabinet)

Late 19th century
The large cabinet set on four scroll feet and designed with three shelves, six sliding doors, two hinged doors and four drawers set into a "bamboo" frame and decorated with seven scholars in the bamboo grove, courtiers in landscapes and gamboling horses in several shades of gold and black hiramaki-e and takamaki-e and inlaid ivory details, the surrounding areas with swirling dragons and roundels on and a geometric pattered against a nashiji ground, hardware carved with scrolling vines and the hollyhock crest of the Tokugawa clan in relief, interiors nashiji
