A lacquer tebako (accessory box)

By Utagawa Reimei, circa 1940
The rectangular box with bevelled edges and decorated on the exterior with a design of herbaceous peonies in colored lacquers raised in low relief and dusted with metallic powders on a beige ground, the edge of the cover trimmed with an applied band of mother-of-pearl, the interior of the cover roiro-nuri with a silver togidashi half moon and flowering vines in iro-e togidashi, the lower half of the box with a continuation of the flowering vine motif and the slightly splayed foot lacquer fundame and decorated with birds and flowers in red hiramaki-e; base sparse nashiji and signed in gold lacquer Reimei saku

With wood storage box inscribed Shakuyaku makie tebako (Lacquer accessory box with peony design) 14 1/2 x 9 7/8 x 7 3/8in (36.8 x 25.1 x 18.7cm)
