Square lobed netsuke deeply carved with blossoming flowers and fitted with a hinge opening to reveal a compass with astrological signs lacquered in gold hiramakie against a black-lacquer ground, the compass needle housed in a glass enclosure and marked with directional characters in black ink on a gold-leaf ground, fitted with a shakudo cord ring 1 3/4 x 1 3/4in (4.4 x 4.4cm)
