The first carved as two stags huddled close together, each with a branch of reishi fungus clenched between their teeth, the plinth on which they stand decorated with reishi designs, signed on the underside Joryu; the second carved as a squirrel on a large cluster of grapes, the hair rendered with fine lines and stained for effect, signed in an oval reserve Ran'ichi 1 1/4in (3.3cm) wide each
