Footnotes
The son of Kano Masanobu (1434-1530), Motonobu developed the Kano workshop system that was instrumental in establishing the Kano School as the dominant group of official painters for generations to come. He was a versatile artist who created large-scale decorative screens and sliding door panels of subject matter ranging from landscapes and bird-and-flower paintings to religious figures for important temples in Kyoto. In addition, he created numerous intimate landscapes in a softer ink monochromatic style which represented the interpretation of Chinese ink landscape paintings in Japan.
