Footnotes
Ikeda Koson was a Rinpa School artist who studied with Sakai Hoitsu (1761-1828) in Edo. This painting illustrates four of the Seven Grasses of Autumn – pampas grass (susuki), bellflowers (kikyo), yellow valerian (ominaeshi), and pink or wild carnation (nadeshiko). The theme finds its earliest reference in the Manyoshu, an eighth-century compilation of poetry, and was particularly popular with Rinpa painters. A painting such as this would likely have been displayed in autumn in hope of a good harvest. The moon and the extended reeds of pampas grass add to the feeling of melancholy associated with this season.
