Footnotes
Published: Shohaku. burai to iuyuetsu (Kyoto National Museum, 2005), no. 95.
The Kyoto National Museum catalogue suggests that his straw hat may identify the main figure as the Northern Song poet Su Shi (1037-1101). The face of the smiling or laughing sage resembles that of a sage at the far right side of one panel of the 'Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove' fusuma, dated to 1764 in the collection of the Mie Prefectural Museum. See Soga Shohaku ten (Mie Prefectural Museum, 1987), no. 62 (top).
