An engraved electioneering plain stem wine glass, dated 1761

The large drawn ogee bowl inscribed Succefs to Sir Francis Knollys 1761, within a pair of tied leaf fronds, set on a conical foot, 17.2cm high

Footnotes

Another example bearing the same inscription, from the Walter F.Smith Collection, was sold at Sotheby's, 4 December 1967, lot 156, illustrated by Sir John Risley, 'Georgian Electioneering Glasses,' Burlington Magazine, November 1920, pl.II, fig.3.

These glasses may have been engraved to commemorate the Reading election of 1761 when they returned two members, John Dodd and Sir Francis Knollys. Sir Francis, the last male heir of an old Oxfordshire and Berkshire family was created a baronet in 1754; he died without issue in 1772.
