Footnotes

Literature:
Lloyd (2000), p.92, pl.127(b) and p.91

Capillaire is a drink based on orange-flower water and maidenhead fern, for which there are numerous recipes. It was used as a sweetening agent for raw spirits. Dr. Samuel Johnson (1709-84), who preferred strong liquor, was in the habit of adding it to port.
