A rare engraved Duke of Cumberland baluster goblet, circa 1730

The bell-shaped bowl with solid base, decorated with the bust portrait of the Duke, to dexter within a circular medallion inscribed HIS ROYAL HIGHNESS WILLIAM DUKE OF CUMBERLAND, the edge of the medallion with starburst, set on a plain stem with large basal knop and solid circular firing foot, 16.7cm high

The companion piece was in the H.N.Hignett Collection, sold at Sotheby's, 17 October 1958 and in the Walter F.Smith Collection, sold at Sotheby's, 18 March 1968, lot 404. It has been suggested that the pair were used as firing glasses at the meetings of the Cumberland Society.
