This would appear to be the only known example of a Beilby wine glass in the Gothic style. The Gothic revival in the 1760s was promoted by Horatio Walpole, 4th Earl of Orford (1717–1797). An English art historian, man of letters, antiquarian and Whig politician Walpole is now largely remembered for Strawberry Hill, the home he built in Twickenham, south-west London where he revived the 'Gothick' style.
