Footnotes

His encounter with the painter Shalom Sebba in the second half of the forties was a decisive turning-point in Roth's work. Their common ground was not only the German language, but also an entire world of concepts and approaches, a love of theatre and of stage design, and of course Max Beckmann, whom they both admired greatly. Shalom Sebba gave Roth the sense that it was legitimate to go back to painting as he had learned in Germany, and Roth felt that he was gaining the strength to return to himself, allowing him to paint "as I am".
