Born in Poland, Meir Steingold studied art with the sculptor Zeev Ben Zvi at the refugee camps in Cyprus, and later with Marcel Janco and Zvi Marowitz at the Oranim Art Institute in Tiveon. Both artists influenced him deeply. In the 1960s Stiengold developed his own style of sombre expressive compositions, best demonstrated in his powerful series of "Horses and Riders", "Interiors", and "Pages".

The current lot is an excellent example of his work, painted in 1958, just before the artist developed into a freer, more expressionistic and abstract style.
