International Flight and Airman's Rally

An Austrian Silver & Enamel presentation Cigarette case, the rectangular case engraved with a map of Northern Europe and the various air routes of the rally to Rangsdorf Aerodrome, Berlin. Together with the Olympic rings and the date 1936. The gilt interior inscribed with a DH85 Leopard Moth aircraft, bearing the registration OE-ABC, registered to the Austrian Aero Club in 1934, in a chamois leather case 75 x 100mm.

Presented by Prince Ulrich Kinsky to Miss Margot Hambling, passenger with her sister on the Prince's De Havilland Leopard Moth on the occasion of the International Long Distance Air Rally from Yoxford, Suffolk, to Berlin, July 29th 1936. Thence by direct descent.

The Aero Club of Germany arranged a long distance air rally to Berlin-Rangsdorf Aerodrome between 29th-30th July 1936 , with the aim of encouraging foreign amateur pilots to attend the opening of the Olympic Games. Land and sea planes were admitted up to a weight of 5,250lbs. They had to start at 0600 on the 29th and finish on the 30th between 1400-1600hrs. 16 Nations entered for the rally, a total of 54 aircraft, with Austria entering the largest contingent of nine, one piloted by the President of the Austrian Aero-Club, Prince Ulrich Kinsky.

Prince Ulrich Kinsky 1895-1938.
10th Prince Kinsky of Wehinitz & Tattau (Austrian nobility, abolished post WW1) was born in Bohemia. In later life he was a prominent member of the Sudeten German Party, which resulted in the confiscation of their Czech estates post WW2. A prominent amateur airman, motorist and sportsman, he was instrumental in introducing Polo to Austria in 1910 and was an Umpire for the event at the 1936 Olympiad. He died in Vienna at the age of 45.
