Footnotes

Helena Mayer was a world champion fencer who took silver for Germany during the '36 Games. In 1933, she was expelled from the Offenbach Fencing Club as a result of her Jewish heritage, but when the Amateur Athletic Union boycotted the 1936 Games (unless Jews were given the opportunity to compete) the German Olympic Committee invited Mayer to fence for Germany.
