An extremely rare Meissen teabowl from a service for Clemens August, Elector of Cologne, circa 1725-30

Painted on one side with a harbour scene depicting ships and figures within a quatrelobe gilt scrollwork cartouche embellished with Böttger lustre and iron-red scrollwork, the reverse with two chinoiserie figures supporting the initals 'CA', flanked by two birds with a laurel wreath in their beaks and a kneeling figure, the inside with an iron-red circular vignette of a fisherman in an Oriental landscape, and a gilt scrollwork border to the rim, 4.5cm high, incised x inside footrim

This teabowl remains the only recorded piece from an early tea service that was presumably made for the Elector Clemens August of Cologne, who possessed a considerable collection of Meissen and other porcelain, including the celebrated tea and coffee service of 1735 (see footnote to preceding lot).
