A Meissen teabowl and saucer, circa 1723

Each painted with a chinoiserie scene within a quatrelobe gilt scrollwork cartouche with Böttger lustre edged with rich iron-red foliate and strapwork decoration, the teabowl depicting a gentleman and a lady with a fan, indianische Blumen and insects to the reverse, the saucer with an exotic figure seated at a table with his servant in the background, gilt scrollwork borders to the rims, three concentric iron-red circles to reverse of saucer, the teabowl: 4.5 cm high; the saucer: 12.5 cm diam., incised // inside footrim of saucer and / to teabowl (2)

The scene on the saucer is based upon an engraving by Martin Engelbrecht, Nobilissimus Dominus Kiakouli in Villa sua, from the series Habitus et mores Sinsnsium, published in Augsburg in 1719 (illustrated by Blackburn, op. cit., ill. 55, and M. Cassidy-Geiger, Graphic Sources for Meissen Porcelain: Origins of the Print Collection in the Meissen Archives, Metropolitan Museum Journal 31 (1996), fig. 10). A tankard painted with a scene after the same engraving in the Warda Stevens Stout Collection is illustrated by Blackburn, op. cit., ill. 57, and in Exotische Welten (2010), cat. no. 28a. A sketch of the same scene is in the Schulz Codex, pl. 28.

Buyers' Premium and Charges
For all Sales categories, buyer's premium excluding Cars, Motorbikes, Wine, Whisky and Coin & Medal sales, will be as follows:
Buyer's Premium Rates
28% on the first £40,000 of the hammer price;
27% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £40,000 up to and including £800,000;
21% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £800,000 up to and including £4,500,000;
and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £4,500,000.
A 3rd party bidding platform fee of 4% of the Hammer Price for Buyers using the following bidding platforms will be added to the invoices of successful Buyers for auctions starting on or after 6th July 2024 – Invaluable; Live Auctioneers; The Saleroom; Lot-tissimo.
VAT at the current rate of 20% will be added to the Buyer's Premium and charges excluding Artists Resale Right.
