Tuke loved to travel, and in his later years the South of France and Northern Italy were frequent destinations. In January 1925 he travelled to Rapallo to stay with his old friend Captain Dowman and from there went to Genoa where he took a Dutch boat to Algiers. He was met by his friends, Renny Stradling, his mother Mrs Stradling, his sister and Forbes Robertson. Tuke went out sketching on the water with Renny and also painted the Casbah. On 10 February he writes in his diary, "Renny and I went to the extreme N. E. corner of the Harbour and saw nice groups of fishermen and boats going to sea. Sketched a bit and went back to the hotel." This is probably the sketch he did on that day of the fishermen in their boats in the harbour at Algiers.
