Footnotes

木彫根付 親子人魚 銘「虎渓」 19世紀前期

For a very similar example by Kokei see The Raymond and Frances Bushell Collection, a Legacy at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, 2003, no.219.

Compare the almost identical example signed Minko, lot 68.

Kokei has been recorded for many years as a student of Tanaka Minko of Tsu in Ise province and a number of netsuke by both makers are known which bear striking similarities. However, as stated by Nori Watanabe in The International Netsuke Society Journal, vo.21, no.1, Spring 2011, p.46, he actually studied in Kameyama before moving to Kuwana, also in Ise province.
