A wood netsuke of a recumbent wild boar

By Naito Toyomasa (1773-1856), Tanba, 1855
Lying with its head raised, and its body twisted slightly to the left, its forelegs bent as if about to rise, the slightly-worn wood bears a good patina and the eyes are inlaid with pale translucent horn, signed hachi-ju-ni sai Toyomasa. 4.5cm (1¾in).

The wild boar, as shown in this attitude, was made in several versions by Toyomasa. For somewhat similar examples, see George Lazarnick, ibid., p.1191; Joseph Kurstin, Netsuke, Story Carvings of Japan, selections from the collection of Joseph Kurstin, 1994, p.70; and The Netsuke Collection of W. G. Bosshard, Part I, Barry Davies Oriental Art, 1994, no.45;

The inscription on the present example states that the netsuke was made by Toyomasa at the age of 82, two years before his death.
