Seated, its head turned down to the right as it scratches its right cheek with one hind paw, forming a compact composition, one leg forming the himotoshi, the ivory is slightly worn and the eyes are inlaid, signed in two oval reserves Hogen Rantei. 3.5cm (1 3/8in).

There were two or three successive generations of netsukeshi from Kyoto working under the name of Rantei and the present example is by one of the later makers, working during the middle part of the nineteenth century.
