An ivory netsuke of a tiger

By Matsushita Otoman (Otomitsu), Hakata, 19th century
Lying, its head raised to the left as it snarls a warning to a predator, one forepaw raised, ready to strike, and its tail curling forward over the back, the ivory is slightly worn and the eyes are of pale horn with dark pupils, signed Otoman (Otomitsu). 4.2cm (1 5/8in).

The artist, whose name can also be read as Otomitsu, used two different forms of signature. The present example is signed with two large red-tinted characters, Oto-Mitsu, as opposed to that on the netsuke of goats, lot 141, which is signed with three characters, O-to-man.
