A remarkable Birmingham Chatelaine set with Staffordshire enamel and with an enamel-cased watch, circa 1780

The reverse of the case painted with an interior scene of a gentleman and lady discussing the time on the watch held in his hand, the front of the case framed in pale blue enamel painted with flowers, containing a watch with an enamel dial inscribed 'DUCOMMUN JERSEY', the gilt metal chatelaine with delicate pierced repoussé work, with four small oval enamels of fruit and birds connected by chains, surmounted with an oval enamel panel of a young boy, with further hanging objects including a key, a lens and an enamel egg bonbonnière, 20.5m long overall, the watch case 5cm diam (slight restoration to watch case and dial) (2)

Footnotes

The source of the painted scene appears to be an earlier printed design used at Battersea in the 1750s. A Battersea plaque with this scene is illustrated by Susan Benjamin, English Enamel Boxes (1978) p 49
