The portrait of the Landgrave Friedrich II of Hessen-Cassel is based upon an engraving by W.C. Mayr (illustrated by Beaucamp-Markowsky 1988, p. 143) of the portrait by Johann Heinrich Tischbein, now in the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Kassel.
Friedrich II (1720-85), who was educated in Geneva and Lausanne, married firstly, Marie, a daughter of King George II of England, and in 1773, Princess Philippine of Prussia. In 1749 he secretly converted to Catholicism. He supported Prussia in the Seven Years War and in 1760 was made General Field Marshall. After the war, he encouraged industry, manufacturing and the arts in Hessen, founding the Academy of the Arts in 1777 and the first public museum in Europe, the Fredericianum, in 1779.
