A gold-mounted rectangular porcelain snuff box, circa 1760

Mounted en cage, each separate panel painted in Meissen style with a landscape scene depicting figures and buildings by a river or harbour, the mounts chased with scrollwork and flowers, the interior gilt, 7.7cm wide

The scene on the cover is based upon an engraving of a Venetian palace by Melchior Küssel, titled 'Palazzo des Ambasciator von Frankreich zu Venedig in Canal regio', published in two series in 1681 and 1682 by Johann Wilhelm Baur (illustrated by Cassidy-Geiger 1996, fig. 35). The same scene was used on a Meissen dish from the 'Christie-Miller' service, sold in these Rooms from the Hoffmeister Collection, 24 November 2010, lot 53.
