A monumental Minton majolica cistern: Mermaids with Shell
circa 1870

Modeled as a scallop shell, supported and flanked by two mermaids on a seaweed entwined shell base and oval foot.
height 23 1/2in (59.5cm); width 39in (99cm)

Footnotes

Minton used this design (shape number 1301 in the factory records), to represent their majolica at several important exhibitions in the late 19th century, including the Centennial International Exhibition of 1876 in Philadelphia and at the Imperial Institute in London in 1894, where one was priced at 27 guineas.
