Footnotes
Originally cast as a pair with another figure similar, by Paul Dubois, the models together, called Deux Femmes Debout, were exhibited by the artists at the Paris Salon of 1877 and were subsequently cast in four sizes, the above lot being La réduction no. 1. The two figures were planned as a pair to light either side of the foot of the grand staircase of Compiègne Palace, north-east of Paris.
