Footnotes
In 1698, Antoine Coysevox received a commission to create two equestrian groups to memorialize the glory of the king. Carved in Carrara marble in an incredible two year span (1701-2), the resulting sculptures, Le Renommée Monté sur Pégase and Mercuré Monté sur Pégase, measuring about 10 1/2ft tall, are each carved from a single block. Originally placed at the entrance to the park at Marly, they were moved to the west entrance of the Tuileries Gardens in 1719 and later replaced by replicas in 1986. Today, the pair sit in prominence in the Louvre in the Cour Marly, the room devoted to the sculpture commissioned by Louis XIV and Louis XV of the Château de Marly gardens.
