PROJECT MANHIGH.

5 draftman's sketches for high-altitude manned ballooning capsules:
1. "Artists' sketch of Manhigh capsule showing component parts." June 30, 1957. Cutaway view showing pilot inside. Some tape repairs with a few stains.
2. "Proposed one-man capsule." October 17, 1955. Images of the exterior assembly, cutaway view vertical, and cutaway view horizontal.
3. Untitled sketch, undated. Showing a more spacious balloon-carried capsule in several views.
4. "WRI [Winzen Research Inc.] proposal for MIS capsule." May 15, 1958. Cutaway views.
5. "WRI proposal for MIS capsule." May 15, 1958. Exploded-view isometric sketch with several detail images.
All pencil on tracing paper. Approximately 34 x 22 inches.

These and the drawings in the following four lots were produced by designers at Winzen Research Inc. of Minneapolis, and are mostly initialed in pencil as approved by Otto Winzen. Winzen won contracts for the development of Project Manhigh, a USAF balloon flight program designed to investigate the human factors of space flight by taking men into the stratosphere. Manhigh I took place on June 2, 1957, and took Captain Joseph W. Kittinger II to 96,760 feet—at the time a balloon altitude record. Items 4 and 5 seem to be designs for a capsule to be carried by a rocket ("Cut away view of capsule in missile").
