LUNAR SURFACE FLOWN US FLAG—APOLLO 14.

Flown flag, silk, 4 x 6 inches, inscribed on the bottom 3 white stripes "Flown to the lunar surface / aboard Antares, Feb 5, 1971 / Edgar Mitchell Apollo 14 LMP." Together with a Typed Letter Signed by Edgar Mitchell.

Flags flown to the lunar surface, as opposed to merely in lunar orbit, are rare. EDGAR MITCHELL'S letter reads, in part: "On February 5, 1971, Alan Shepard and I landed our Lunar Module 'Antares' on the Moon at Fra Mauro, during mankind's third lunar-landing mission. To commemorate this milestone, I personally carried the accompanying 4 x 6 inch American Flag with me in my Lunar Module 'Personal Preference Kit' bag.... This Lunar Surface Flag has been a valued part of my personal space collection since 1971."
