TELEGRAMS TO CHARLES "PETE" CONRAD.

Approximately 195 telegrams sent to Conrad and the other Apollo 12 crew members, November, 1969. Several with "received" ink stamps or similar marks. Contained in period leatherette binder.

An evocative series of messages from the golden age of space travel, opening with a telegram from Vice-President Spiro Agnew saluting the crew as "great spacemen and great Americans." This telegram is inscribed by ALAN BEAN "We were all Navy and proud to do our duty." Correspondents include Admiral John S. McCain Jr. (father of the presidential candidate) and Ted Kennedy, who writes a witty poem: "His exploits were great, the maidens did swoon / But whoever thought he'd go to the moon." Other telegrams range from the bizarre ("If you meet a flying carpet on the moon, just think that it's coming from Messrs. Busschaert Carpet Factory") to the lyrical ("Feel, as strong gusty gales within your clipper's ghostlike sails, the million million heartborn prayers of all who care to see man's mind ever brave").
